چکیده

For mass action kinetics, the capacity for multiple equilibria in an isothermal homogeneous continuous flow stirred tank reactor is determined by the structure of the underlying network of chemical reactions. We suggest a new graph-theoretical method for discriminating between complex reaction networks that can admit multiple equilibria and those that cannot. In particular, we associate with each network a species-reaction graph, which is similar to reaction network representations drawn by biochemists, and we show that, if the graph satisfies certain weak conditions, the differential equations corresponding to the network cannot admit multiple equilibria no matter what values the rate constants take. Because these conditions are very mild, they amount to powerful (and quite delicate) necessary conditions that a network must satisfy if it is to have the capacity to engender multiple equilibria. Broad qualitative results of this kind are especially apt, for individual reaction rate constants are rarely known fully for complex reaction networks (if they are known at all). Some concluding remarks address connections to biology.

Concordant chemical reaction networks and the Species-Reaction Graph.

In a recent paper it was shown that, for chemical reaction networks possessing a subtle structural property called concordance, dynamical behavior of a very circumscribed (and largely stable) kind is enforced, so long as the kinetics lies within the very broad and natural weakly monotonic class. In particular, multiple equilibria are precluded, as are degenerate positive equilibria. Moreover, u...

Multiple Equilibria in Complex Chemical Reaction Networks: I. The Injectivity Property

The capacity for multiple equilibria in an isothermal homogeneous continuous flow stirred tank reactor is determined by the reaction network. Examples show that there is a very delicate relationship between reaction network structure and the possibility of multiple equilibria. We suggest a new method for discriminating between networks that have the capacity for multiple equilibria and those th...

Complex-Balanced Steady States of Chemical Reaction Networks that Contain an Eulerian Cycle

This work pertains to chemical reaction networks and their equilibria, called steady-states. Our main result states that for a cyclic chemical reaction network, there is a straightforward characterization for when a complex balancing steady state exists. We then extend our results to chemical reaction networks consisting of a closed path traversing each directed edge exactly once.

Graph-theoretic conditions for zero-eigenvalue Turing instability in general chemical reaction networks.

We describe a necessary condition for zero-eigenvalue Turing instability, i.e., Turing instability arising from a real eigenvalue changing sign from negative to positive, for general chemical reaction networks modeled with mass-action kinetics. The reaction mechanisms are represented by the species-reaction graph (SR graph), which is a bipartite graph with different nodes representing species a...

A Graph-Theoretical Approach for the Analysis and Model Reduction of Complex-Balanced Chemical Reaction Networks

In this paper we derive a compact mathematical formulation describing the dynamics of chemical reaction networks that are complex-balanced and are governed by mass action kinetics. The formulation is based on the graph of (substrate and product) complexes and the stoichiometric information of these complexes, and crucially uses a balanced weighted Laplacian matrix. It is shown that this formula...
